Oceanographical Equipment

The Water Research Laboratory provides world-class service in the field of marine and water resources data. WRL develops and implements systems to monitor a wide range of environmental parameters including ocean and tidal currents, water levels, turbidity and water quality using leading edge techniques and equipment.

Sampling using a hired fishing boat - Yamba

Current metering and sediment plume monitoring using ADCP and Sequoia instrumentation

Marine measurements:

  • Workhorse Sentinel Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP)
  • Sontek Argonaut SW flowmeter for in-situ shallow water flow measurements
  • Sontek Acoustic Doppler Velocimeters (ADV) for precise in-situ velocity field monitoring
  • GPS drifters and drogues
  • A range of vented and non-vented water level sensors for tidal and wave measurements
  • A range of capacitance wave probes of different dimensions (0.2 to 2 m length)

Water quality instrumentation:

  • Sequoia LISST Laser 100X for in-situ suspended particle analysis
  • A range of turbidity probes
  • Seabird SBE 19plus SEACAT Profiler equipped with pH, salinity conductivity and depth recorders and a Chelsea Mini-Tracka fluorimeter
  • WETLabs turbidity and fluorimeter sensor
  • Hydrolab Minisonde for Ph, temperature, depth, dissolved oxygen and redox measurements
  • Thermistor strings
  • Water sampling devices including rosettes & Niskin bottles

WRL regularly deploys its instrumentation in open ocean and estuaries using commercial research vessels and experienced diver teams. WRL is currently undertaking the deployment of a wave follower (KNMI Wave Follower) in the Bass Strait for research purposes in the field of air-sea interaction.
