Jan joined WRL as a Scientia PhD Candidate in late 2020. He is particularly interested in ecosystem restoration as a tool to combat environmental degradation and climate change, with his current research focusing on the large-scale restoration of the Gayini Wetlands in south-eastern NSW.

Before coming to Australia, he studied environmental science and engineering and conducted interdisciplinary research in hydrology, biogeochemistry and climate change in Germany, the Netherlands, Portugal, Svalbard, Switzerland, and the United States.

Jan is a passionate bocce player, with a throwing technique named in his honours (at least within WRL).
