South Steyne stormwater pipe upgrade complete
Winter sun lovers can now enjoy the revitalised community space around the stormwater pipe at South Steyne, Manly. Upgrade works finished recently on the design developed by Northern Beaches Council and the WRL-Haskoning project team, which comprehensively considered the environmental loadings for the site.
The original pipe was constructed in the 1970s. It had degraded in the aggressive marine environment, and then was substantially damaged in the June storm of 2016.
As a part of the new design, permanent beach seating has been used to encase and protect the stormwater pipe after it was internally re-lined. The water quality at Manly has also been enhanced through the installation of additional trapping devices as part of the broader project. Now one of Australia’s most iconic beaches has a new reason to be enjoyed as the magical location that it is.
