Ian Coghlan has completed a Master of Engineering Science degree with specialisation in the field of Coastal Engineering and Management, a Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical) degree, with first class honours and a Diploma in Engineering Practice. He has eight years’ experience working at the Water Research Laboratory and has undertaken and managed a range of projects primarily in the fields of coastal structures, coastal processes and hydraulic structures. These studies include physical modelling, numerical modelling, desktop analysis, field investigations and data analysis. Ian is a member of the Institution of Engineers Australia and regularly attends their Coastal, Ocean and Port Engineering Panel (Sydney Division) seminars. He has been a surfer for over 15 years.
Ian is an Australian expert in two-dimensional and quasi three-dimensional flume physical modelling with expertise in the application of over 20 physical models for assessing coastal and marine structures. He has completed desktop based coastal process studies ranging from assessment of small property developments, through to regional coastal climate change vulnerability assessments. Ian is also an expert in numerical modelling of rivers, estuaries and oceans and analysing large datasets.
