Overview

The Water Research Laboratory can best be described as an expert problem solver in the areas of water, coastal and environmental engineering and groundwater. WRL undertakes research and offers advice to address complicated water engineering problems relating to groundwater, hydrology, river flow and flood plain management, estuarine and ocean hydraulics, sediment transport, stratified flow, pipe flow, major pump installations, hydraulic structures, water distribution, wave and surge predictions, foreshore protection, breakwater design, sea level rise and climate change adaptation, coastal zone management and environmental studies.

Our laboratory has significant resources including:

  • A team of highly experienced professional and academic staff comprising engineers, scientists, trades and sub-professionals
  • Sophisticated hydraulic laboratories
  • Numerical methods including three dimensional modelling
  • Field data collection equipment
  • A groundwater laboratory
  • The Water Reference Library which contains over 21000 items

Commercial activities undertaken by WRL have been recognised both within Australia and overseas. WRL’s association with the University of New South Wales School of Civil and Environmental Engineering ensures a high calibre of personnel and facilities at WRL which is of the highest importance, ensuring the maintenance of our prestigious record, built up over considerable time. WRL guarantees that commercial activities are executed with strict regard to quality, time, and budget, and are in full accord with authorised project briefs, proposals and contractual agreements.
